The song I chose to study this week is called “Mukwasha” by Mukudzeyi Mukombe, better known as Jah Prayzah, a Zimbabwean musician. While he produced this song as a solo artist, Prayzah is also a main participating member of the band Third Generation.
This song tells the story of a man asking for a woman’s hand in marriage. Though the beat sounds very jovial and happy, the lyrics translate to strict rules the man must follow in order to earn a place within this family. The parents of the wedded-woman have many regulations for the future groom, and he has to be sure to follow these obligations in order to be accepted as the new head-man of the home.
I was able to notice how much of this song focuses on the off-beats. The style of this song sounds decently modernized, with the two chorus verses and a single bridge.
