The song I selected is called Mukwasha which is by Jah Prayzah. Jah is a Zimbabwe contemporary musician. Many refer to him as Shona which means soldier because he is often depicted wearing a military uniform within his band. I chose this song in particular because Jah’s voice is unique and distinct, which sticks out above the instruments. Jah is also a modern musician from Zimbabwe which made me interested to hear how Zimbabwe culture is still instilled in the music. I found this song on Youtube. The song is meant to be humorous as it talks about the relationship between a husband and his in-laws within an African culture. Thinking about the musical characteristics, it offers a subtle and calm timbre. The voice of Jah matches the tune that the instruments play and they blend together in harmony. The instruments have low dynamics and are not overpowering. There seems to be a lot of electronic sounds in the music as well. There is a constant, regular beat and some accenting by a chordophone. Lastly, there is little range in this music, as it stays around the same pitch the entire song.
