“Yeke Yeke” is a very vibrant and exciting song by Guinean artist Mory Kanté. It was released in 1987 and apparently was quick to become one of the first African songs to achieve global recognition. Mory Kanté, known for his mastery of the kora (the West African harp), blended the traditional ‘Mandinka’ music with amazing modern electronic sounds. The song’s lyrics translated, convey a message of unity and peace, which celebrates the shared heritage of their people. The energetic beats and extremely catchy rhythms make it a very danceable anthem. I chose “Yeke Yeke” not only because of this great rhythm and beat but also because of its interesting applications to the diversity of Sub-Saharan Africa that I have yet to understand. Mory Kanté’s fusion of traditional and more modern parts shows this is quite the unique energy of African music.
