For this song share assignment, I selected a Hindustani inspired song that utilizes the singer’s three-octave range to create a smooth, melancholic song. This piece is not melancholic in nature, for it is about a woman sharing how much she missed her lover while he was away, however it develops as a sad beginning to potentially reflect the “missing.” I chose this song from YouTube because of its ‘Raga’ form, since we discussed this in class. The Raga form begins with a fluid improvised part/melody, going on for however long the performer wishes; the raga then shifts into a semi-composed second half as a rhythmic section develops and sustains until the piece ultimately comes to an end. Such can be observed in “Mishra Bhairavi Thumri,” by Nina Burmi
