This song was performed by Nina Burmi at the 2013 Darbar Music Festival. The Darbar Festival celebrates and promotes traditional Indian music. I chose this example because of its traditional form.
This piece seems more improvised. The vocalist cues the other performers with her hands, and she mirrors the notes she sings with her hands. The song starts out slow, but moves into a faster section. There’s a section towards the end where the vocalists slows down, but the tabla continues to play fast, which I thought was interesting. Besides the tabla, a stringed instrument called a sarangi plays along and mirrors the vocal part. The song ends by slowing down to its original speed.
