Daisuke Ishiwatari is a lyricist and composer as well as a video game developer! The song “Mirror of the World” was composed for the latest in his series of “Guilty Gear” games, “Guilty Gear: Strive,” and is the Main Theme of the character Baiken, a one-armed, one-eyed Onna-Musha (a Female Samurai) named Baiken. Seeking revenge against the forces that wronged her, “Mirror of the World” reflects Baiken’s belief of her personality, feeling like a scorned demon of the World at first, but over the song, realizing she is able to change how she sees herself and promising to use her power for better things than revenge. A Buddhist Mantra of Light can also be heard throughout the piece: “Om abogya beiroshanō makabodara mani handoma jinbara harabari tayaun”, roughly translated to “Praise be to the flawless, all-pervasive illumination of the great mudra. Turn over to me the jewel, lotus and radiant light.” Other mantras can also be heard, such as “Naraku ni utau wa rokkonshōjō,” or “In Hell, we chant of the purification of all 6 senses,” “Gedō no kūsokuzeshiki sanzen no fujō,” translating to “Heresy’s form is an illusion, the defilement of all, and “Ganpon no mumyō sanzen no shōjō,” translated roughly to “The ignorance of the origin, the purification of all.” Ultimately, “Mirror of the World,” along with having amazing production quality, is an insightful piece that teaches self-forgiveness, nobility, and resolve.
