The song I picked for chapter 10 is Mhondoro Dzinonwa, but more specifically I’m picking to share it through the performance of the great Zimbabwe dance group. Mhondoro is a traditional Karanga song from Zimbabwe. The song’s 3/4 rhythm is called mhande and is used at rain-making ceremonies. The word Mhondoro translates to lion, and the whole song references the lion coming to drink the water from the river. I chose to show this song with the dancing because I thought it was a good insight into more cultural aspects. Although this recording doesn’t highlight the vocals the best, it allows us to see how instruments are being played including how the music is made to the rhythm of the dancers.
