Made by Miki Matsubara at the exceptionally young age of 19 created one of the cornerstones of “Citypop” which was a period of high degrees of Western influence fusing into Japanese Pop. From the “jazz” undertones and melody of the song to portions of the song being in English, most notably the beginning, its clear that this lovely hybrid melds both styles of popular music during the period (1970-1980). The song is essentially a one-sided love story with the woman begging the man to stay with her. While the song could be interpreted numerous different ways. From simply being with a busy workaholic man, which was and still is a custom of Japanese culture post Meijing restoration, to longing for a lost love it spoke different stories to all who listened to it. What compels this even more is that the song doesn’t sound depressing, it sounds vibrant! No, not vibrant… passionate! Great passion for wanting a loved, even simply a friend or family member, to just come back to be with you. Quite honestly it could be understood a hundred different ways, hence why its influence or at the very least power of presence was undeniable for the time. Most notably it is making a recent resurgence due to an Indonesian singer who enjoys reviving and revitalizing this genre of music.
