The song I chose for my European song share assignment is called “Matador Ole” by Alec Makinson. The song is an important part of Spanish culture and is meant to visualize what the matador goes through during the piece. The term “Matador” in Spanish literally means “bullfighter” and “Ole” is an encouraging exclamation used during such a bullfight. As I listen to this piece I hear a few instruments, those being; a trumpet leading with the melody, a distinct flamenco-style guitar, castanets for the “clicking” sound, a second guitar taking over the melody from the trumpet, and clapping later in the piece. Something that I found interesting is that this composition features various guitar techniques, including slapping, a sort of high-pitched playing, and consistent strumming. Another Important thing I hear is deliberate pauses throughout the piece likely to represent moments when the matador awaits the bull’s charge. I chose this piece for its catchiness, its strong portrayal of flamenco music, and its intriguing historical connection towards Spanish bullfighting culture.
