“Marryuna,” by contemporary Aboriginal Australian artist Baker Boy is a twist on the Yolngu word for dance. Marryuna originates from the Arnhem Lands of the Australian outback, and means an improvised dance for the fun of it. In other words, there is an aboriginal word for “dance for the hell of it.” I found this recording through family members, myself being an Australian citizen. I actually enjoyed listening to this because it was nice to hear to both my western ear and “ethnomusicology ear,” like a comfortable blend. This upbeat, rapped song portrays a positive message about enjoying life and dancing, as the title suggests. With an electronic rhythmic background played under a recurring dijeridoo “harmony,” all in support of the vocal melody, this piece features a positive mixture of traditional and modern influences with the intention of inciting joy in the listener. It’s bright, and upbeat, with a constant beat that any listener can follow along to and ideally dance to.
I hope you enjoy like I did! Have a good day!
