My song is “Mais Que Nada” by Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66. The song was made in Brazil and is sung entirely in Portuguese. The song was originally written by an artist named Jorge Ben Jor in 1963, but it was covered by Sergio Mendes in 1966 and that is when it became a hit around the world. The song was so popular it became a staple in Brazilian music. The genre Mais Que Nada falls into is called bossa nova, which is similar to samba music, and it was developed in the 50s and 60s in Brazil specifically out of Rio de Janeiro. I found this song when I was first getting into 60s music a couple years ago when was recommended for me on Youtube. It has since been a song I listen to often because I love the quick pace and percussion it has. There is a constant beat with added rolling drums and a metallic sounding percussion along with a clicking to respond to the voices when they enter. The song has an exciting, fun energy to it which I always enjoyed.
