This Italian folk song was recorded in Messina, Sicily. This folk song is sang by many authors, but this version is by a man from Catania, with guitar and chorus. A wagon-driver sings nostalgically about his little donkey, that passed away. Lu Me Sceccu is a traditional folk figure from Sicilian culture, often depicted as a playful and whimsical character. Sceccu, which translates to “the donkey,” symbolizes humility and hard work, often serving as a reminder of the simple joys and challenges of everyday life. Through tales of his adventures, he connects generations, preserving local folklore while offering lessons about resilience, community, and the importance of laughter in facing life’s hardships. Like I said the only instrument being used is guitar and the singer relies on his vocals to carry the story telling. A lot of traditional Italian music relies heavily on strong vocals. That is the exact reason I chose this song, the vocals alone attracted me to choosing this song.
