This song is a vocal and percussion performance from musicians in Kouroussa. Kouroussa is a town in northeastern Guinea, Africa and is a major port city on the Niger River. This town is mostly known for the Djembe, an African drum tradition which started with the Malinke tribe in this area. This tradition started with the workers in the fields, the Djembe would be played with the rhythm of the sounds made from the people and work itself. This would give energy to the people as they worked. Here they have taken common and popular rhythms and play verse like solos on top called “voices” as a reference to the sounds of individuals working.
I chose this song because I’ve been researching Afro-Brazilian music and the Djembe tradition is one of the influences. Some of the backing rhythms that drive this song are staples in the Afro-Brazilian music practice. I also chose this song because of the talent shown in this recording. The musicians here are a perfect example of a truly great rhythm section. They are not just playing on tempo and together, but they feel and express the rhythm as a group. This allows them to make music out of percussion which is somewhat uncommon. I also love the unique sound the Djembe brings to the ensemble, it’s obvious that the Djembe players in this recording are masters of the drum. All together, it’s a wonderful experience and so easy to dance along with!
