The song I’ve chosen, known as “Lagu Jawa X Electronic Music” is a fascinating mixture of traditional Indonesian music and the more modern, and potentially more familiar to us as western listeners, sounds of electronic music. The song begins with a solo female vocalist, who is then joined by the sounds of synth drums as well as some traditional instruments, such as two drums, which appear to belong to the kendhang family, as well as a metallophone that appears similar to the Bonang family, both of which traditionally appear in Gamelan ensembles. Also in the song appears another metallophone that appears to belong to the Gendèr family, but that doesn’t arrive in the music until much later. Also featured towards the end of the song is a male vocalist and a string instrument. I chose this song primarily because of the interesting fusion of traditional music and modern concepts, something that quite typically influences my own composing, and is honestly easy to relate to.
