The song I chose is “Lady Grinning Soul” by David Bowie. The song closes his album Aladdin Sane, an album that personifies an outsiders perspective of America. Part of the reason I chose this song is because of how it made me have more appreciation for the piano. The piano throughout this song and the entire album exhibit a huge range, from rhythmic pockets to the background to full on solos the piano serves the album as needed. The vocals share a haunting but enticing quality that drives the hiding quality. He sings about temptation, questioning, “How can life become a point of view?”. The song holds a moody warmness that displays both loss and ethereal qualities in a hypnotic way.
