Lā Mai, Lā Mai Túelē: https://youtu.be/1Amr0qBukuQ
Lā Mai, Lā Mai Túelē Traditional Tongan Chant is considered to be in the genre of Oceanic Folk more specifically to the Polynesian Islands. Lā Mai, Lā Mai Túelē is said in the language of old Tongan which sounds familiar to Samoan language since the two cultures were located close to each other. The Tongan culture adapted the dance called Otuhaka to go along with this chant and many others. The Purpose of the chant is to tell a story. There are a lot of misconceptions about the chant since it is in the language of old Tongan which sounds extremely similar to Samoan.
In Lā Mai, Lā Mai Túelē there are vocals from both men and woman, body percussion, and a drum. I found this recording on YouTube and from the description the person who posted the video got the music from “Chants From The Kingdom Of TONGA”, Recordings By David Fanshawe. I chose this particular example because I found the vocals very similar to other chants and music I’ve heard before from other Oceania cultures. The chant was overall very pleasing to listen to which is also why I decided to use this example.
