The song I chose for Southern Asian music is called, “Kun Faya Kun”. Kun Faya Kun is a piece in which it is mainly comprised of singers who are engaging in Qawwali. Qawwali is a form of devotional music in Sufi Islam used to express deep spiritual emotions and feelings towards their belief. The Urdu phrase “Kun Faya Kun” means “When He wills, it shall be” which is referring to the creative power of God. I chose this piece because it is both a catchy tune and a song that holds a strong spiritual symbolism. Some other instruments that appear in this piece are the guitar, the oud, the harmonium, and a few others.
