The piece I chose is by a traditional Ghanian drumming ensemble. Right off the bat I notice how happy everyone in the ensemble is to be there and making music together. This piece has an upbeat tempo and makes me feel like dancing. Even though they are performing for some sort of audience, this piece seems more like one that would be played for a community to dance and sing along to or a piece that would be played just for fun, only for the ensemble to enjoy; personal. They are playing many instruments that I recognize from when we played a tune in class on Tuesday. There is a shaker, drums, and the gankogui! It was fun to see the instruments I got to try out in class used in a more traditional setting to make a really beautiful, cheerful piece of music. The polyrhythm adds a really cool dynamic to the piece as well and gives it so much character and light.
