I played this in high school for solo ensemble with the steel drum ensemble. This style and arrangement for steel pans is interesting because it doesn’t follow the cultural norms with the type of music you would typically hear from this type of group. This arrangement is of a very familiar pop tune and even has a tenor saxophone solo towards the end. A typical steel pan ensemble usually plays music from places such as the Caribbean, in a style that is energetic and highly rhythmic. The typical ensemble may also have a drum set, and other percussion on occasion. You could say that this arrangement of Kokomo takes on a western adaptation of what a person would typically think of to be a steel pan ensemble; as they are fairly similar but this example includes the detail of American pop music and the addition of a wind instrument.
