The song I have chosen is Ke Aloha O Ka Haku by Queen Lili’uokalani. This song is also known as “The Queen’s Prayer” which she composed during her imprisonment at Iolani in 1895. This song is traditionally done as a hīmeni also known as a church hymn. The piece starts out with a solo piano playing a meditative melody. Then it begins with a lone voice singing the melody over the piano. Then after the first verse, a second voice joins in and sings sort of the counter melody and some of the harmonies. Then breaks with another meditative piano solo coming back with the second voice leading the melody this time and the first voice joining in to sing in conjunction with the second voice again singing harmoniously. And just like almost every hymn in most churches, it ends with âmene or amen. The purpose of this song is to ask for the Lord’s compassion for those who have done any wrong to Lili’uokalani.
