The song I selected, Jowenna (Sweet Hawaiian Girl), is written and sung by George Viekoso. The artist is professionally known as Fiji and is a Fijian musician, vocalist, songwriter, and music producer. George is a native of Fiji and is from the province of Tailevu. I picked this song for the assignment because of how upbeat and tropical the rhythm comes off. Even the artist’s voice is something that makes it feel as if you’re being transported to a tropical place. That being said, I feel as if this song makes me think of happy memories and moments I’ve had on vacations. I think this is a good song for the class to hear because it is so different from what we would commonly hear walking around De Pere. The instruments, voices, and tempo all seem exactly what I would think when someone asked me about an Oceania-styled song.
