(218) John Cruz Island Style – YouTube

John Cruz, a Hawaiian singer-songwriter does storytelling through songs ranging from Hawaiian to blues, folk, R&B etc. He is a multi-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winner.  The Song is called island style and it first opens with a ukulele type instrument and first listening to it sounds calming and almost a warm feeling. The vocal comes in and he sing in a soft high Tener voice and starts describing what it’s like on the island. While doing my research I wasn’t able to find a full background of the songs meaning so I’m going to give my opinion of the meaning of the song. Because of Cruz background with the art of storytelling to portray is songs, in this piece he sings about what I’m guessing his home and what it’s like to be on the island, talking about the meals his mother would make, singing family and the things he would do on the island and being able to sing about his roots. The song gives off a loving warm vibe I chose this song because from the moment I heard the instruments playing the specific pattern and the song title gave me the idea that it was going to be about life on the island and i loved listening to the story he was telling within the song.
