In the mood is a classic jazz standard that almost every jazz musician has either played or at least heard of. Jazz originated in the early 20th century in New Orleans; which is an area where the population was more diverse than any other area in the south in its time. This is where people of African, French, Caribbean, Italian, German, Mexican, American Indian, and English descent interacted with one another. Jazz came from African American music traditions mixed with other tradition and jazz gradually emerged from ragtime, marches, blues, and other genres of music. What makes jazz unique is the broad style of music characterized by complex harmonies ( extended 7th,9th, 13th, etc. chords), syncopated rhythmic ideas and irregular beats, call and response techniques, solos, and a very heavy emphasis on improvisation. One of the most familiar styles of jazz is swing; but other styles include blues, ballad, Latin, samba, gypsy jazz, and ragtime. The earliest forms of jazz started out with ragtime and gypsy jazz, but the more modern style mostly heard today is swing. After the first recordings were made in the early 1900s, the idea of jazz spread like wild fire and developed rather quickly. Some big names in jazz that helped in the evolution are Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Miles Davis. Today jazz can be found everywhere, from the radio to bars to concerts, festivals, etc..
