This piece is played by the National Arab Orchestra, who we have listened to in class. The organization began as a student organization at the University of Michigan led by Michael Ibrahim and quickly grew and expanded into multiple ensembles. In 2014, the National Arab Orchestra debuted their first concert. The piece they’re performing in this video is composed by Mohamed Abdelwahab, who was a famous 20th century Egyptian singer, actor, and composer. I chose this piece because I was inspired by the video we watched in class and am intrigued by how Arabic music is played in a traditional orchestra setting.
