This arrangement actually contains two different songs, the first one being “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” and “Thula Sizwe”. I chose this arrangement specifically because I sang it in my high school choir 2 years ago, and in this particular song sharing I want to talk specifically about the “Thula Sizwe” portion. To start off, the song begins with the choral piece “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” and runs through half of the song’s run time before reaching the second half, “Thula Sizwe”. This song was written as a form of protest against the apartheid happening in South Africa. The lyrics themselves are simple, repeating in English “Nation, do not cry, Jehovah will protect us. We will attain freedom, Jehovah will protect us.” I absolutely loved singing this song as it very similar to a lot of music found in Africa, where their stories of work and strife are told through music. The song carries such a hopeful attitude and positive message, which is through by the way the music sounds.
