If you see the movie Lilo & Stitch, then you probably heard of this song. He Mele No Lilo is the opening song of the film. The song “He Mele No Lilo“, is derived in large part from “Mele Inoa no Kalakaua” (Name Song for Kalakaua), a traditional Hawaiian chant. The meaning of the song comes from the name “Lilo” which means “Generous One” and its origin is Hawaiian. It can also be interpreted as “Lost”, and this would give the song title “He Mele No Lilo” a loose translation as “Lullaby of the Lost”. The video I inserted (link on “He Mele No Lilo”) has the translation of the song lyrics. In the original song “Mele Inoa no Kalakaua” the song only has two instruments, one voice, and a percussion piece called “Ipu”. But the newer version “He Mele No Lilo” has many instruments playing. We have more than one voice singing in this version, we have the original voice and then we have a choir to back it up. For the other instruments, we have the percussion “Ipu”, Guitar, and Piano. The reason I chose this example is because Lilo & Stitch will always be one of my favorite childhood movies and the movie also took place in Hawaii.
