He Mele No Lilo, also known as He Mele Inoa O Kalākaua, is a song originally from the album Po’okela Chants by Mark Keali’i Ho’omali. It is known for being used as the opening theme to the Disney movie Lilo and Stitch. The original version was meant to be a chant, but was edited into a song for the movie. The song’s edited title translates to “A Song For The Generous Ones” and goes on to describe the beauty of Hawaii’s islands and the beauty of its previous rulers. When I realized that Hawaii fell into the region of Oceania, I immediately thought of this song because of its presence in my life growing up. I love the song’s beautiful harmonies between the male and higher ranging voices as well as the percussion that drives the song.
