This song is called “Hat Giao Duyen”, and it is a song that originates from northern Vietnam, specifically more in the area called Halong Bay. This is a very beautiful and unique area of Vietnam, where the locals live in floating fishing villages, so this area is naturally known to have super delicious seafood and attract lots of tourism. This song, “Hat Giao Duyen”, is sung in a style that is called “Quan Ho”, which originated in a nearby area. This style of music sings about the issues of the heart, such as love, hardships, and heartbreak. This song can often be heard on the floating fishing villages of Halong Bay. In this song, both male and female singers can be heard, however the song is sung mostly by females. There are many instruments involved in this piece, and instruments similar to a flute, the drums, a slit-drum clapper, and the instrument that we discussed in class that makes the “boinging” sound can be heard. I chose this song because I thought it was super catchy, and I thought it was in theme with today being Valentines Day. I also really enjoyed learning more about Halong Bay while researching more about this piece, and found it helpful to attach a song with an image of a location.
