Hal-e-dil Woh Poochhen Aane Lage is a song by Malika Pukhraj. She was a popular singer located in Pakistan. She was born in 1912 and died in 2004. She was originally born in India, which is also where started her music career. In all her music you can hear a lot of influence from India even though she is predominantly a Pakistani musician. From the song, I could pick out 5 instruments, the main one, of course, being her voice, an instrument I believe to be violins, an instrument that sounds like the sitar, an instrument that sounds like a tabla, and some sort of flute sound instrument. At the beginning of the song, it sounds like the violin and the sitar-sounding instrument are playing at the same time. The drums almost come in immediately, and I can hear different pitches to the drum just like you do the tabla. Similar to the Carnatic Classical Singing, the tunes are mimicked, however, in this song it is the vocalist mimicking the strings instead of the other way around. There also sounds like there is a drone in the background but instead of just droning on a few notes it follows the tune that the vocalist is singing. The flute-sounding instrument is very faint and can be heard most during the instrument-only parts.
One thing about her music that is fascinating is that her songs are Ghazals. A Ghazal is a form of poetry, originating in Arabic poetry. These Ghazals are usually used to express the pain of loss or the beauty of love in spite of the pain it causes. In fact, the song I chose follows both of these themes. I was not able to find a very clear translation, however from what I did find I was able to make out that this song is about the heart. More specifically, how much the heartaches when their loved one far away, and if they were not to have their loved one’s heart they would die.
