” Fakateretere ” – Gabilou – YouTube

‘Fakateretere’ is a song created and performed by Gabilou. He sang it in the Paumoku language of the Tuamotu Island group which is found in French Polynesia. When listening to this song, one can take notice of the many instruments being utilized such as a ukulele, a drum, two voices, a tambourine, and a few other unrecognizable ones. It contains a constant rhythm and a melody that dances with harmony.  The upbeat and chill atmosphere that it produces attracted other artists to make covers and even hula dancers to perform it. The translation of the song seems to imply a carefree love for a pretty girl. Although not much information regarding ‘Fakateretere’, one could infer that the artist was using music to attempt to connect with his Native Tahitian ancestry. I chose this song because of its inviting tone and its old age. The song being created in 2001, has not surfaced until Josh Tatofi covered the song much more recently. I feel it is important to appreciate the origins of music no matter how old it is.
