The song I chose is “Forbidden Friendship” composed by John Powell. This song is part of the soundtrack for the movie How to Train Your Dragon. John Powell was born in England but he resides in Los Angeles where he has composed scores for over 70 different films. The composition within the movie How to Train Your Dragon features traditional Scottish influences. Additionally, it uses instruments from that area like the fiddle, bagpipes, uilleann pipes, Great Irish warpipes, and the pennywhistle. The score instrumentation relies on over 30 percussion instruments and many instruments from the European region. I don’t recall ever seeing the movie myself, but I picked the song from the movie because I played an arrangement of this music in high school. The music stuck with me to this day and I immediately recognized where the soundtrack originated from as we began to listen to examples in class. I specifically chose the song “Forbidden Friendship” because of its unique sound and the instruments used. The song has such a gentle and calming sound to it and throughout the entire song, you can hear some sort of toned percussion instrument which uses vibrations. The song also features clips from separate songs in the soundtrack but in more of a happy and calming tone. This song specifically was nominated for Film Score of the Year. The soundtrack also won the International Film Music Critics Association Awards in 2011.
