Growing up with an Irish Step-dancing Mom, I became familiarized with pub music. One song in particular I remember from growing up was, “Finnegan’s Wake,” by the Irish Rovers. A fully Irish band, I decided to include their music because of the Irish Bagpipes we studied this chapter. Although not having the bagpipes, this song includes instrumentation such as the bodrhan -Irish Drum- as well as violins and a banjo and more. This song, ideally played in pubs as a drinking song, is a good example of Irish music because it can be considered a reel. I always imagine reels as songs that work like wheels, always returning to a core melody like a wheel would spin. Plus, it kinda makes you want to dance! Enjoy!
