For this week’s song share, I have chosen a song by Wizkid and Tems titled “Essence” . Wizkid and Tems are both natives of Nigeria comes off of Wizkid’s album Made in Lagos and falls into the Afrobeats genre.  Wizkid was born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun and Tems was born Temilade Openiyi both in Lagos, Nigeria which is the most populous city in all of Africa.  Both Tems and Wizkid have received international recognition, as both artists have won a Grammy .  Tems won hers for best melodic rap performance, and Wizkid won his for best music video. I also find it noteworthy that Wiskid was a feature on Drake’s song “One Dance”, which is one of the most popular songs to come out of the 2010s.  Needless to say, both of these artists are stars and their collaboration in this song puts their talents on full display.  Throughout the song, a calming beat plays accompanied by the vocals of Tems who sings the hook.  Then Wizkid jumps in and sings his verse with the same energy and rhythm that Tems was giving.  After the hook plays again they combine and sing back and forth which was perhaps one of the best features of the song in my opinion.  The best feature of the song which is such a great part of all Afropop was the beat of the song.  This is both a song that you can sit down and relax to or something that makes you want to get up and dance.  It gives off such easygoing vibes and puts me in a great mood every time I listen to it.  Another great song that makes me feel the same way and features Wizkid, is Skepta’s song Energy which is one of my favorites.  Wizkid has lots of great music, and I highly recommend listening to his music.
