The song I picked is called “El Alcohol No Funcionó” by Banda Renovacion. This band is a Mexican Christian band featuring three brothers. Typically, their band varies from 10 to 20 members. The group formed in 2009 and they have released many albums and singles which have topped the Latin Christian music charts. Within their music, they blend both the contemporary music of Christian with traditional Mexican styled music. While they have won multiple awards, one of their most successful achievements includes a Grammy for the Best Latin Pop Album in 2020, nominations for the Latin Grammy’s, and various features in movies, shows, and commercials. The specific song I chose was one that was released after 8 years of their career. While many of their songs are meant to appeal to the heart and the long of God, this song especially hits the heart. This song talks about heartbreak within the group members, and in particular how alcohol did help, or function, as it should’ve during this time of heartbreak. It is a song that they felt many could connect with.

I only recently came about this song a few weeks ago. My brother attends UWGB where he’s recently made some friends with Spanish cultured backgrounds. They introduced him to this song, even translating it for him. He ended up adding it to our work playlist, as we’ve been stuck working together in the kitchen at Kwik Trip for the past how many weekends. The song is super catchy, with such a full sound of instruments and vocals. I enjoy the sort of polka like sound this song has, as well as song of the other songs he has introduced me to. I will warn that the music video is a little sensitive in topic but contains so much power.
