Desh is a Hindustani classical music raga composed by Khamaj thaat. A raga uses a melodic type of framework that is only used for improvisation. The raga is unique feature of classical Indian music tradition, and as a result has no direct translation to concepts in classical European music. There are two different classical music traditions in India: Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian). Desh is Hindustani, or North Indian, meaning it came from the North Indian region.
