This song is a Swedish Folk song called “Den ljusa hallingen” which translates to “The Bright Slope.” My best guess is that it’s describing a mountain, given that it would be bright when it’s covered in snow. The instrumentation in this recording has a fiddle, guitar, snare drum, and mandolin. The fiddle carries the melody, the guitar and mandolin help support the chords and riff, and the snare keeps the rhythm.
This song is in a 2/4 beat feel, which is consistent with the primary purpose of dancing. It follows basic folk music form of AABA featuring a really cool hemiola pattern in the B section. I think this group has done a wonderful job showing great musicianship. They have clear articulations and dynamics to begin with but they also are all locked in and having a great time.
I chose this song very similarly to most of my song shares, I was listening to a suggested playlist on YouTube when I stumbled across it. I enjoyed this one above the others because of the upbeat tempo, still played with interesting articulations and careful dynamics. It is a very catchy tune and easy to start dancing to. After reviewing the video, I was pleasantly surprised to see how the percussionist was able to use household objects combined with knowledge and technique to create a balanced sound to correctly fit the small group and add to the song.
