The recording I’ve chosen is a recording of Daniel Jatta, a Jola scholar and musician, playing a tune his father wrote on the Akonting. I chose this recording because of the inclusion of Daniel Jatta, who was the first scholar to introduce the concept that the akonting and other similar non-griot artisan lutes from Africa were the true predecessors to the banjo, rather than the wooden bodied plucked lutes scholars had originally pegged as the origin. I also rather enjoy the tune, which is rather simple in design, simply being a voice and the akonting, both parts being performed by Jatta.
