For my song of choice this week, I have gone with “Could You Be Loved” by Bob Marley.  It is a basic pick to go with a Bob Marley song for this unit, but I recently did an Apple Music Replay to see my most played songs of 2023 so far and this one is in my top 20. Bob Marley is definitely atop my list of favorite artists to listen to when you want to chill out and feel good about life.  The Best of Bob Marley & The Wailers has so many reggae classics, and every time I listen to that album it puts me in a fantastic mood.  We all know Bob Marley, and know how legendary he is, so I won’t go into much detail about his history as the reggae icon.  My appreciation for Bob Marley began when I was younger, sitting in the back seat of my mom’s mini van.  My mom had a playlist she would always play over and over with so many different songs from different genres.  Every now and then, the playlist would shuffle to “Buffalo Soldier” by Bob Marley which is such an enjoyable song to listen to.  I was really young when I began hearing this song, and one of my main reasons for liking the song was because the word “buffalo” was in the song title.  But that song just brings a lot of fun memories of me and my mom singing along to Bob Marley, and that’s why I enjoy listening to his music so much.  Now I’m older and I have listened to much more of his music, and “Could You Be Loved” is my new favorite.  As I said, this is a great song to chill out, and you can certainly pick up on the polyrhythm.  This song was created while The Wailers were experimenting with guitar on a plane ride in 1979.  The intro is my favorite part of the song with the emphasis on the bass guitar which prompts the rest of the instruments to come into play.  The instruments used in this song include guitars, bass, drums, acoustic piano, a Hohner clavinet, an organ, and the cuica (a Brazilian friction drum).  All of these instruments along with the voice of Bob Marley and and background singers combine in the culmination of a classic reggae tune that is certainly worth a listen.
