The song that I chose is called “Chinese Song to the Virgin Mary.” I chose this song because the title caught my attention since I’m Catholic and have some knowledge about the Virgin Mary. Since I have a religious background, I thought it’d be interesting to hear a religious song from a different culture. This song was very calm and had a slow tempo. There weren’t many instruments in this song, if any. It was mostly vocals with a female voice singing the whole song. I don’t know if drones are common in Chinese music, but it sounded like there was some type of drone throughout the whole song, made either by other voices or possibly a chordophone of some sort. The main function of this song is to ask the Virgin Mary to pray “for our Chinese Christian brothers and sisters persecuted because of their faith”, as well as “for so many millions of them who have not yet received the light of the Gospel” as the description helpfully explained.
