The song I have selected for the chapter on Europe is entitled Cherry. This song is from British singer Harry Styles’ second album Fine Line. The reason that I have chosen this song is because it encapsulates both the European and American influence on popular music. There are elements that give the song an English character such as the singer’s British accent that can be heard on some words throughout the tune, as well as elements of the melody and word choice in the song. One example of this is in the line “does he take you walking ’round his parents’ gallery” in reference to an art gallery, which is not a word that we typically use in America, we instead lean towards the word “museum” when referring to a place in which art is displayed. The style and format of the song is modernized and Western influence is displayed so that the song may be enjoyed by the widest possible audience. Finally, in the outro of the song, there is a clip of Harry’s ex-girlfriend speaking in French, which includes yet another culture in the song, and is included in reference to an earlier line in the song stating “I just miss your accent and your friends”, referring to her French accent and demonstrating the interaction and admiration of other cultures.
