Chega De Saudade

The bossa nova is a fusion of cool jazz and the samba; it was formed in Brazil in the late 1950’s. Composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and the guitarist João Gilberto tend to be considered the founders of the bossa nova. The instrumentation varies, but is typically simplistic. This may include a few rhythm instruments such as a drum, guitar, or piano accompaniment.

Chega De Saudade was the song that solidified the bossa nova as a permanent Latin genre. This song was originally released by Brazilian singer, Elizete Cardoso, on her 1958 album Canção Do Amor Demais. This recording did not gain much traction with the public. However, when João Gilberto released it as a single, it became a hit and solidified the bossa nova as a permanent Latin genre.

I chose this genre because in high school I had researched it and fell in love with the sound. We played a bossa nova piece in my high school jazz band where I played a solo; this got my gears turning and inspired me to do my trimester Spanish project on this genre. This eventually turned into me composing my own simple bossa nova where I played the alto sax melody over a piano and drum accompaniment.
