I chose this song because after I listened to it, I couldn’t seem to get it out of my head! I think a lot of this has to do with it following a structure that is similar to music we would listen to today in the West. There are very clear verses, with the song always returning to the overall chorus. I highly recommend watching the video while listening to the performance, as it allows for a better understanding of each of the different pieces that make up the performance. We get to see both the vocal and instrumental performers working together to make a collective sound. I especially liked when near the end of the performance, the tempo picked up even more and the performers let loose a little more, pumping their fists and laughing – it is such a beautiful representation of the joy that comes from making music and carrying out cultural practices through music! Even as I am writing this, I can still here the chorus in my head, which I think is pretty impactful!
