I have selected the style of music referred to as the “Bomba” from Puerto Rico. When we were first introduced to the Caribbean chapter, I knew I would be able to relate to the music a lot better/more effectively because I have traveled there and because it is so close to the United States. I also knew I wanted to choose a musical piece from Puerto Rico because this was the most recent place I had visited. We talked quite a lot about economics in class and how they influence music. Puerto Rico is a United States territory and when I was there over spring break, I realized that it was far different than other places that I had been. Meaning, the economic status was higher and it almost felt as if I was still in the United States. The “Bomba” is a style of music and dance in San Juan (the capital) and two surrounding, smaller cities. It is very popular to the area and includes many drums which make for an uplifting sound, and normally women in long dresses are dancing to it. This is a very interesting song and dance which is why I knew I had to include it as my song share for this week!
