For this song share I chose a song from the Black Panther soundtrack. Black Panther is set in the fictional African country of Wakanda, which draws inspiration from countries like South Sudan and Ethiopia. The movie soundtrack featured pop songs from American artists as well as pieces inspired by African music of those regions. This song is the “Wakanda/Waterfall Fight” theme and was composed by Ludwig Göransson. The vocalist is Baaba Maal, a singer and guitarist from Senegal who has spent her life bringing African music from different regions around the world. Another artist featured as a drummer is Magatte Sow, who performs as Magatte Fall. This drummer comes from a long line of musicians who specialize in West African music. In this piece he plays the Tama, also known as the talking drum, and the Sabar, a drum played with one hand and a stick. Magatte Fall is a famous drummer who has played with artists like Stevie Wonder and Janelle Monae and has performed in Carnegie Hall and at the opening of the Washington D.C. African American Museum. I chose this song because Black Panther is one of my favorite movies and this movie drew in a lot of praise for its authenticity in showing different African cultures, fashion, and music.
