This song is called “Bangla Dhun” by Ravi Shankar. It is an all instrumental raga-type piece that begins slow and a few minutes in it picks up in speed and complexity. The song additionally starts off without any drumming, but it is added at about a minute in. As the song goes on, you can hear the drumming take a stronger role in the piece and the pacing gets faster with the string instruments. I chose this song because I love how calming it is in the beginning half and how intricate it becomes later on. I found this song a couple years ago because it was featured on the album Concert for Bangladesh by Ravi Shankar and George Harrison. The duo created the concert (later released as an album) as a way to provide aid to East Pakistani people who fled to India for safety from famine. Shankar, being from northern India, cared deeply about this topic and was happy to provide music for the concert and album to help. This was one of the first huge aid concerts and I find the story of it’s creation to be very interesting. I also am a fan of many of the artists who performed at the concert such as Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and Eric Clapton. I additionally think it is a great example of how music can have a global impact.
