I decided to share a song that I know for this song share. The song I chose is one I heard a few years ago called “Banana Boat (Day-O) by Harry Belafonte, and I discovered it sort of by accident. At a football practice one day we had music playing and “Banana Boat” had accidentally been queued up to play. When it started playing we were all caught off guard because we were listening to 2010’s pop music and then Calypso music talking about banana’s began playing. Despite the fact that we were not expecting this song to play and it did not necessarily have the same vibe as the music we were listening to before, we all really enjoyed the song. We were dancing around and trying to sing along (even though we didn’t know the lyrics) and just having a good time. Looking back on that practice now, I think it is a perfect reflection of Calypso music that we talked about in class. We discussed how Calypso music can have a playful or lighthearted take on some serious or intense topics like economics and poverty. And we were just enjoying the music and the moment which I feel like is what the intention of the song is, at least partly. I think it also important to talk a little bit about who Harry Belafonte was. Harry Belafonte was born in New York, but he grew up in Jamaica. He was an actor, activist and singer who is most famously known for his Calypso music.
