The song that I have chosen is “Arabian Riff” from Egypt, which has multiple variations that were published in the nineteenth century. This song has multiple other names including “The Streets of Cairo”, “The Poor Little Country Maid”, and “the snake charmer song”. This tune is typically paired with a belly dance and accompanied by snake charmers. The melody of this song was borrowed from a famous French song in the 1700’s, but that song was based on pre-existing Algerian melodies. The song starts out slower in the introduction, but builds as the song progresses. The main instrument that can be heard is a string instrument, which creates the melody for the tune.
