After our demonstration in class I really wanted to explore oud music more. This specific piece is from an album of oud music from the performer, Rafael Krux. The second track of this album, timestamped 4:42, is an improvisational song that he performed. I really enjoyed the timbre of the oud as with nylon strings it really reminds me of a classical guitar. On top of that, the improvisational characteristics of the piece allowed for very interesting uses of modal techniques and tempo changes. The piece will lure you in with almost meditative like portions and then launch into fast and exuberant modal runs that demonstrate the performers prowess of the oud. My favorite instrument that was demonstrated in class has continued to be a source of enjoyment as I explored middle eastern music for this song share. I find the oud, specifically in solo settings, to be extremely engaging and captivating as it really draws the listeners ear to it as both familiar and exotic all around.
