Aloha Oe means “lover’s embrace” and is a popular “bidding farewell” Hawaiian folk song published in 1884. It was allegedly written by Liliuokalani, Hawaiian’s only queen, who reigned for only 2 short years. Since then, it has been performed by prominent singers like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and is featured in Disney’s Lilo and Stitch. I found this particular rendition on a Youtube Tahiti Fitness Channel and was instantly drawn to the fun, fast-paced, energizing beat. I love to dance and workout, so it made me want to get up and move around! It also reminded me of something I would have enjoyed as a kid. As for the musical characteristics, I heard a drum right away as the song began, which continued throughout the song (and it sounded pretty difficult to play if I’m being honest). There were several voices throughout the song including a solo holler at the beginning and end, harmonization with male and female voices I presume (which was very pleasing to my ear), and it sounded like a kid had a small solo part. A group of lower male voices also had their own section. I visualized a brightly colored array of hula skirts, flowers, and intricate dancing while listening to the song which added to the overall excitement of the piece. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbdWTeA3uFY
