The song that I chose is “All Hawai’i” by Sudden Rush (feat. Ka’ikena Scanlan, Fire Woman & Homework Simpson) from their 2018 EP Overthrow. Sudden Rush was formed in 1993 and has been very popular since, but their most famous song “All Hawai’i” was released in 2018 and that is when they garnered the most fame. This group is known as one of the most successful Hawaiian hip-hop groups. Sudden Rush is widely known for creating ‘Nā mele paleoleo’ which is their genre of Hawaiian hip-hop and rap with traditional influences and Hawaiian language. The song “All Hawai’i ” expresses their support of the Hawaiian sovereignty movement. Much of their music is influenced by political ideas and their demands for Hawaiian independence.

The reason I chose “All Hawai’i” is because it sounds like music I am familiar with, but with a twist. It is very clear that Sudden Rush has ties to the 1990’s hip-hop scene, but they completely made it their own by incorporating the Hawaiian language. The beat and mixing of this song is really invigorating. Political messages have always been very important to the foundation of the hip-hop/rap scene, and Sudden Rush proved that a familiar style using a different language can be touching, exciting, and successful.
